A MAN who took a friend’s car and drove at up to 120mph on a Bradford motorway during a police chase has been jailed.

Andrew Duffy, 38, went out for drinks with a friend and then took his car, a silver Ford Mondeo.

Duffy then joined the eastbound M62 from junction 28 (Tingley Interchange) and drove at speeds of between 100mph and 120mph. He was spotted on the motorway by police officers, who used their car’s lights and sirens to indicate for him to stop, which Duffy ignored.

He was undertaking other motorway drivers who were forced to change lanes to avoid the speeding Duffy.

Duffy, who was in the car alone, then came off the motorway at junction 26 (Chain Bar) and travelled on a series of A-roads; Bradford Road, Cleckheaton Road and Fair Road in Wibsey.

He was also clocked at 80mph in a 30mph zone on Cleckheaton Road and was caught travelling at 70mph on Bradford Road, which has a 40mph speed limit.

He continued to undertake other vehicles during the A-roads section of the police chase.

Duffy only stopped when one of his car’s tyres burst when it hit a kerb. He left the car and ran off but was quickly caught by police and subsequently arrested.

The incident took place in wet and dark conditions on August 14, 2019.

Helen Chapman, prosecuting, today told Bradford Crown Court that it was a ‘prolonged police chase’.

The court also heard Duffy had a previous conviction for dangerous driving dating back to 2017.

Duffy, of Poplar Terrace, Keighley, was jailed for 10 months for aggravated vehicle taking and disqualified from driving for two years and eight months. He was told he will eligible for release halfway through his sentence and would then serve the second half of it on licence.

Julian White, mitigating, said: “This offence took place on August 14, 2019, this offence is of some age and he has no offending since then. He is a more mature man now and rehabilitation is a real possibility here.

“He is really, really disappointed with himself and he said to me ‘It is all my own fault’.

“He is a man who is trying to get himself back on the straight and narrow and he has let himself down on this occasion.

“He will lose his house if he goes to prison and he has childcare responsibilities.”

Sentencing, Recorder Judy Dawson told Duffy: “You went out with a friend and took his car without his permission.

“You were sighted on the M62 and indicated to stop by police. At that point with lights and sirens flashing, you had a choice to make.

“You put every other road user in danger by taking off at between 100 and 120mph, causing other roads users to change lanes. At such speed, you would not have had as much control.

“It’s a very high speed on a motorway and A-roads and was significantly while being chased by police.

“You were a danger to the police, yourself and every other road user.”
