TWO Bradford-based supercar hire companies say they are already abiding by the legislation a West Yorkshire MP is trying to force through parliament.

Halifax's Holly Lynch of Labour has introduced a Ten-Minute Rule motion, calling on the government to regulate the practice of hiring out high performance vehicles.

She is urging a tightening up of the rules, which would include raising the minimum age, around hiring supercars in a bid to stop them being driven “recklessly” around neighbourhoods.

Early last year a Lamborghini hire car, which was driving at very high speeds, far in excess of the 40mph speed limit, crashed in flames on Wakefield Road.

The law changes would mean any car for rental over 300 horsepower would be required to have a black box which records details of how and when the car was driven.

The driver would also be required to demonstrate to the company renting the vehicle that they had explicit insurance cover as the named driver, for that specific vehicle, for the duration of the rental agreement.

Limo & Supercar Hire and Oasis say they are already using technology to monitor the speed of their customers and can stop the engine remotely when the car is safely parked if the driver has been going over the limit.

Owner of LSH, Umer Ali Shah said: "We ask people to pay a security deposit so they know if anything was to go wrong, because they were speeding, then they have to pay.

"If someone has committed some serious offences, we won’t entertain them. We give proper insurance, we don’t play with anybody.

"I have heard episodes of people hiring supercars to 21-year-olds and over. We do age limits on 25, 28 and 30-year-olds. For example, to rent a Lamborghini Aventador you must be 27 years old."

Oasis operate a must-be 27 years old policy and will not rent out a car if the customer does not meet the criteria on their self-drive hire insurance.

Tracy Brabin, MP for Batley & Spen also backed the motion, titled “High Performance Vehicle Renting (Regulation)”, yesterday and intends to work with MPs and West Yorkshire Police to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries caused on our roads.

Mark Burns-Williamson OBE, Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, said: “I am supportive of the legislation around the hiring of so-called supercars.

“I know about the abject misery this issue can cause residents, not to mention how dangerous the use of these cars being driven recklessly can be.

"So, I hope this proposed legislation is properly considered to ensure measures are in place to ensure that these cars are only used in a responsible manner by those behind the wheel."

Naz Shah, Labour MP for Bradford West, said: "I support the proposed legislation change being put forward by Holly Lynch MP.

"This isn't about stopping people from hiring supercars but ensuring those who do, drive them appropriately. I am sure many people would welcome such changes."

Others also agreed something had to be done about reckless driving.

Shipley MP Phillip Davies said: “Dangerous driving is something which blights the Bradford district and there is a great deal of sense in what Holly is proposing.

"However, it will go to the very bottom of Private Members’ Bills to be considered and so its second reading will never be reached for debate. I hope the government therefore listen to the case she makes and consider bringing in the provisions themselves.”

Councillor Amanda Carter (Con) added: "My view is that the proposed legislation would only have a minimal effect on cars racing, it would not prevent cars other than so called ‘supercars’ racing along the highway.

"The only way to stop this is to implement fixed speed cameras which Cllr Andrew Carter and I have called for over and over again."
