SIR - Regarding the letter on Hey's Breweries Football Team of 1949 (T&A February 23), there was a Hey's Breweries ladies football team in 1921-22, also based by Lumb Lane (image attached). They were Yorkshire champions that season, regularly playing charity fundraising matches, sometimes to gates of up to 20,000.
One of the matches was at Valley Parade, against Dick, Kerr Ladies from Preston, which was won by the visitors. However, such was the popularity of these games that the FA banned all women's football after 1921.
This story, with the team photograph, is told in the book Manningham: People through the mill: past and present by Peter Nias and Mollie Somerville, published in 2013.
