ONE of the final pieces of the puzzle bringing stock car racing back to Odsal got underway this week.

The £200,000 transformation of the famous bowl began at the start of January.

The first week of development was about getting the main infrastructure - the skeleton - of the track installed around the pitch, which included a ring of metal posts.

Workers and contractors on site then battled through Arctic conditions in the second week to put in place and tighten the final ropes, in preparation for the next big step towards the finish line - which currently stands  as April 3 for The BriSCA F1 Stock Cars event.

That next step happened this week when the first batch of shale, used to form the track's surface, was delivered.

Around 50 tonnes of the red stuff arrived in the back of a dumper truck on Tuesday and workers on site spent yesterday and today using diggers to spread the shale out and form the track.

It has all been made possible by Steve Rees, who runs Startrax - a stock car racing promotion company - and a number of enthusiastic volunteers and workers.

Mr Rees was in charge when the last vehicles raced at Odsal, back in 1997.

The return of the much-loved sport could come as soon as April - depending on the pandemic - and Startrax released a bumper list of events, which are scheduled for the rest of the year, yesterday.
