THE Telegraph & Argus has opened this online book of condolence to bring together tributes to the Keighley's Ghulam Rabani.

The 77-year-old sadly passed away on Tuesday, February 16, after being hospitalised with coronavirus.

He will be remembered by the town as an inspiring pillar of the community who dedicated his time to improving the lives of others, particularly the elderly.

He worked in Bradford's textile industry for many years before his voluntary role at the Sangat Centre, which opened in 1992, became a full time job.

The centre manager worked with the elderly community and was a beacon of support for many in the Asian community.

It is the second major loss for the town of Keighley in the past month with covid-19 taking the life of another gem, Councillor Abid Hussain.

In a time when loved ones cannot gather together and pay their respects in person, this online book of condolence will act as a way for families and friends to virtually pay tribute.

Anyone who would like to pay tribute or offer their condolences is invited to leave a message on this page.

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniThe best of people are those who help others. Uncle Ghulam Rabbani was a fine example of someone who genuinely and deeply cared about helping others. He will be remembered for this and his life and work is a great example of how each of us can make a big difference by doing small acts of kindness to others.

From Jean Hepworth

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI am sending my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Rabani. He was the heart of the community, always caring, always there to listen and help. Because he cared and was part of the community he understood and respected their concerns. He was an example to all of us so sincere and with a deep inner strength. We will miss him greatly and remember him always.

From Val Rowlands

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI met Ghulam Rabani in 1993 when we were assisting the 81 members of the night shift at John Haggas to bring claims for race discrimination against their employer. He used to open the Emily Street Community Centre in the early mornings so that we could take statements from the men and prepare the case. He looked after us all, made us tea and without him the case could not have been won. A year later he was doing it for us all again in the early mornings preparing a second case for victimisation. Ghulam Rabani was a true community activist and over the years he has organised meetings for campaigns we have been involved in and we have worked together to provide advice and representation for people with immigration, discrimination and employment cases. He will be greatly missed by many. On a personal level I will very much miss his good humour, dedication and friendship. A unique person and a great loss.

From Mohammed Rasab

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI met Ghulam Rabani in 1969 when we worked together at John Haggas and we stayed in touch after he left to go to the Sangat Centre. He was a very good person who did everything he possibly could for anyone who needed help whoever they were. He worked with all communities. He is irreplaceable. He is blessed by Allah and has a place in Paradise

From Elaine Appelbee

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI had the honour of working with Mr Rabani over a number of years. A more gentle, kind, committed person it would be difficult to find. One project he gave important support to was research and action to improve the community's understanding of diabetes. A particular target of the work was to prevent people with diabetes from going blind. He used his influence to recruit focus groups for the research, encouraged people to give their ideas for action and then helped to spread the word widely in the community. As a result, over a period of a year, we saw a greater take up of screening that is crucial to help prevent blindness. Everything he did was about practical action to improve the lives of everyone in the community. His loss to Keighley is immeasurable.

From Mohammed Ali, QED Foundation

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniWhat a great loss! Ghulam Rabbani was a QED Foundation’s solid partner for over twenty years. We delivered many projects to help ethnic minorities in Keighley. I have always found him to be gentle and humble man. He treated all Sangat Centre staff and beneficiaries as his children. He would always turn out to meetings at QED events in Bradford. He will be greatly missed by all of us at QED. . May Allah grant him high place in heaven.

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI'm so sorry to hear this, condolences to Mr Rabani's family, friends and the community at the Sangat Centre. Mr Rabani was one of very few people who stepped forward to support me when I needed a room for the community group R.O.S.E. to meet up. I remember him being so very kind.

From Kay Lindley

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI had the great privilege of working closely with Mr Ghulam Rabani since 1989 during which time we served as Governors at Utley First School, Victoria Primary School and Greenhead High School for many years. In my role as Chair of the Sangat Community Centre where Mr Rabani was the Centre Manager I was able to see first hand the dedication and commitment he brought to his role. He worked tirelessly and with great enthusiasm for the benefit of the community. He was a very positive role model not only for his peers but also for the younger generations aspiring to make a difference. There will be very many people who, like me, are deeply saddened by the loss of a friend, colleague and leader. My sincere sympathies to his family and all who were lucky to have known him.

Tribute to Ghulam Rabani‎‫إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ‬ We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return I found myself crying yesterday for for the first time in a long time as the news broke that the gentlemen on the left of the photo passed away. Haji Mohammed Ghulam Rabani died as he lived; serving people. I will remember him for helping and changing peoples lives for the better. It breaks my heart that I won’t be able to see him in the Mosque again with that twinkle in his eye and the mischievous smile on his face but I live in hope and God willing we will meet again in Paradise. My thoughts and prayers to his family who can hopefully take comfort in knowing he exemplified one of my favourite quotes; we rise by lifting others. May Almighty Allah Grant Uncle Jannah Ul Firdous. Ameen

From Fazeela Hanif (Highfield Centre)

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniThe first name given to me when I started my role in the Vol sector 20 years ago was Uncle Rabaani of Sangat Centre. A Caring, softly spoken humble man who shone whilst talking about Sangat Centre. You could see the passion he had for the centre and the people he supported. I was very lucky to be guided in my earlier role and later on as a manager for HCA by wise words and the most common subject ‘funding’ always thinking about others to support, excel and exceed. Thank you for all your support, your stories and your words of wisdom Uncle, forever cherished. Keighley has lost 2 Gems in the space of months who were your ‘go to’ people for advice, support and guidance. They have left a huge void. May the Almighty accept your good deeds, elevate your ranks in the Gardens of Jannah and give your family and loved ones sabr through this tragedy.

He would check in on everybody and ask how each individual is.. he really did go above and beyond for all.. I will always remember them with their hands tied to their back, blue rain coat on with their hood up.. walking along and would stop to talk to anyone passing.. what a diamond and what a loss to keighley

From Javaid akhtar

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniWe belong to Allah and to him we shall return! My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the people of Keighley on untimely passing of another pillar and stalwart of our community. It was a pleasure to have worked with him at Sangat centre for over 20 years and his commitment, enthusiasm and passion for the work he did, so successfully, was second to none. He will be sadly missed!🙏🤲🏻

From Helal Ahmed

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI will remember Mr Rabbani for taking the time out to visit patients in Airedale Hopsital who were ‘strangers’ to him. I met him on two occasions when he visited my father and I enquired if he knew my dad and that’s why he’s visiting, and he replied “No, we spend the whole day going from one ward to another just seeing patients.” What a wonderful soul!

From [Rev] Gordon Webb

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI met Mr Rabbani back in 1997-2004 (when I was Methodist minister in Keighley) through the good offices of the late Margaret Burton and Charlie Bhowmick MBE. We were working to develop good community and inter-faith realtions in the town. Ghulam was a delightful man whose gentle, thoughtul manner made every occasion of contact with him a pleasure. His contribution to the invaluable work of the Sangat Centre was immeasurable and deserves wide public recognition. One of the outstanding features arranged through Ghulam's good offices at that time were youth exchanges between teenage lads from the Sangat Centre and members of our Methodist youth group taking place alternately at the Centre and Oakworth Methodist Church Hall. These are still appreciated by members of our group after all these years. I shall remember Ghulam with the greatest respect and affection. If I may put it in Christian terms, he was one of God's gentlemen. May he rest in peace.

Tribute to Ghulam RabaniI did some community engagement work and had never been to the Sangat Centre before. Mr Rabani was so welcoming and kind. He insisted that I stay and eat food with them and it was delicious. It was clear what a pillar of the community he was and how much everyone thought of him and the good work he did. RIP
