A BRADFORD doctor says easing lockdown has got to be done ‘step by step’ to avoid any future repeat of the strict restrictions.

As the Government is next week set to announce its roadmap out of lockdown, Dr Amir Khan says a number of criteria need to be achieved if we are to make this the last spell of lockdown.

These include making sure schools and workplaces are as Covid safe as they possible can be, the vaccination programme needs to be ramped up to younger groups and test and trace.

Speaking today on Good Morning Britain, he said: “We’ve got to be mindful about rushing out of a lockdown too quickly. We all want this to be the last lockdown that we’re in.

“We’ve got to be careful of how we come out of it. Vast majority of positive cases are still in younger age groups. Those people have not been vaccinated.

“There is still a risk of long covid and morbidity as a result of getting coronavirus.

“If we’re going to ease lockdown, we’ve got to do it step by step, really, really carefully.

“We've got to make sure schools and workplaces are covid safe, if that’s possible.

“We've got to really ramp up vaccination to next groups as well.

“Test and trace has really got to work and supported isolation is key for this roadmap out of lockdown.”
