ONE of the Bradford District’s grandest buildings could soon have a number of CCTV cameras installed around it.

Last year Saltaire United Reform Church, a Grade I listed building in the heart of the World Heritage Site, was awarded funding from the Government’s Places of Worship Security Scheme Grant.

The church plans to use the funding to upgrade the CCTV system on the site, saying: “A modern security system is essential in such an important listed building.”

Now a planning application has been submitted to Bradford Council to install seven cameras with infra-red illumination around the building. Six would be mounted externally three metres about ground level and one within the entrance of the church.

A decision on the planning application is expected late next month.

The church was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859, and is considered a fine example of Italianate religious architecture.

It was designed by local architects Lockwood and Mawson - who are behind some of Bradford's grandest buildings.

It includes a mausoleum where Sir Titus and his family are buried.
