A PROMINENT Opposition MP has been named as keynote speaker for this year's Harold Wilson Lecture at the University of Bradford.

Rachel Reeves, who is Labour MP for Leeds West and also the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office, will give the lecture.

It is taking place on Thursday, March 11, the anniversary of what would have been Harold Wilson's 105th birthday, and is being delivered virtually.

A former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1964 to 1970, and 1974 to 1976, Lord Wilson was also the first Chancellor of the University of Bradford, serving from when the university's received its Royal Charter in 1966 until 1985.

The lecture being delivered by Ms Reeves is titled 'Revisiting White Heat in an Age of Insecurity'.

The speech's synopsis says: "In 1963, at a time of accelerating social, cultural and technological change, Harold Wilson promised to harness the 'white heat of the technological revolution' to build a more prosperous, fairer Britain.

"Since Wilson's time, society has changed dramatically: we are a more unequal, less secure society, but we also enjoy many new freedoms and opportunities.

"In a time of growing insecurity and turbulent change - and in response to economic malaise, a climate emergency and a global pandemic - Rachel Reeves will reflect on how we can provide greater security for our families and communities, while building more responsive and resilient public services."
