MORE than 100 motorists have been stopped on our motorways in the past week as part of a major police operation.

West Yorkshire Police worked with Highways England on Operation Tramline, a national initiative by all police forces and the motorway operator.

In the county, 109 vehicles were stopped last week for a range of driving and motoring offences on the M62, M1 and A1.

More than 30 people were spotted using their mobile phone while behind the wheel, or for not being in proper control of their vehicle, and all 32 of them were reported for the offences.

Thirty were stopped for other offences linked to the Fatal Four (which are using a phone, speeding, not wearing a seatbelt and drink driving), with one driver arrested for drug driving.

Two vehicles were in such bad condition they were deemed unroadworthy, while 17 vehicles were spotted being driven without a valid MOT certificate or having vehicle defects.

Sergeant Steve Suggitt from West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit, said: "Our aim is to make the motorway network safe for all road users.

"Driver inattention remains a key contributor to the cause of serious collisions occurring on our roads.

"The focus of our operation was to observe and deal with those drivers seen to be distracted whilst driving.

"During our week long operation, we are still shocked by the number of drivers who are prepared to take risks when driving a vehicle, including operating/using a mobile device.

"Please leave your devices out of reach and check your social media, text messages etc, once your journey has come to an end, when it is safe to do so."
