A MAN stripped a stolen car of its parts to fund his Class A drug addiction.
Shane Henderson, 42, Washington Street, Girlington, appeared before Bradford Crown Court yesterday, after pleading guilty to a charge of handling stolen goods.
The court heard that in March 7, 2019, Henderson was seen to be stripping down a Toyota Auris, worth £22,000 in the Manningham area.
The car had been stolen from a house in Flockton, Huddersfield, on March 5, though there was no evidence to link Henderson to that burglary.
Safter Salam, mitigating for Henderson, said he has been addicted to Class A drugs and has been homeless because of that.
He was said to have been in a “desperate situation” and felt he had no choice but to do what he did to fund his addiction.
The court heard he has a number of physical and mental health problems, but is now participating in a methadone programme.
Henderson was handed a sentence of 33 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.
He must complete 10 rehabilitation requirement days and there will also be a nine-month drug rehabilitation requirement. A victim surcharge will apply.
