A FORMER betting shop in Bradford city centre could be converted into a Slovakian restaurant if new plans are approved.

Salas, a take away on John Street, has submitted a planning application to Bradford Council that would allow the business to expand into a neighbouring unit - a vacant William Hill.

It would allow the independent business to go from small take away to licensed restaurant with capacity for 146 customers.

The application, by Ladislav Orakov, says the business "will have a positive impact to the locality by creating an animated and active unit upon a prominent corner site, and create positive employment opportunities.

"It is hoped by having an active shopfront open for more hours of the day, that the proposal will contribute to the green shoots shown by Plant One on Me and Mean old Scene, and Commonwealth Theatre, all located opposite."

The restaurant would be based on the doorstep of the proposed "City Village" development of hundreds of houses on the Oastler Market site - which is due to be cleared once the new Darley Street Market opens.

The application says the restaurant would open from noon to 2am.

A decision on the plans is expected next month.
