A HUGE amount of opposition to planned traffic calming measures in Idle has led to highways officers re-thinking the scheme.

When a planning application to build housing off Sandhill Fold was approved by Bradford Council, one condition was that developer Avant Homes help fund traffic calming measures on Green Lane and Croftlands.

Bradford Council proposed a series of road humps on the two roads, which would likely see an increase in traffic because of the development.

But when the plans went out to public consultation last year, 73 people objected to the traffic calming measures. Objectors claimed the measures were not needed, that the humps could damage cars, that the work would lower house prices and that it was a waste of the developer's money.

The Council's Highways Department was due to abandon the scheme.

The authority has already spent £5,000 of the developer's £10,000 contribution on drawing up the scheme and consulting with residents.

The Bradford East Area Committee were originally due to vote on abandoning the scheme at a meeting on Thursday night.

However Councillor Brendan Stubbs (Lib Dem, Eccleshill) urged members to instead defer the plans. He said local councillors would work with the highways department to draw up a revised scheme to "suit the needs of the community."

Members agreed to defer the decision to a future meeting.
