BRADFORD has produced its fair share of music stars over the decades and here's a chance to celebrate them.

Here's something to raise a debate; who is your ultimate Bradford-born artist or band?

There have been so many Bradford pop stars over the years. Here are five suggestions, but don't take it as the definitive list, I'm sure many of you will disagree with my choices; that's the beauty of music; everyone has an opinion on what's best.

Instead of just criticising my list, let's get constructive and leave your suggestions in the comments section below.

Here are five of the biggest Bradford music names:

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

KIKI DEE

The Little Horton-born singer was the first female singer from the UK to sign with Motown’s Tamla Records.

Kiki is best known for 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart', her 1976 duet with Elton John.

Real name Pauline Matthews, the duet was her biggest hit to date and went to number one both in the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Working at Boots in Bradford at age 16 during the day, in the evenings Kiki sang songs with a dance band in Leeds before making it into the big time.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

SMOKIE

The Bradford band's most popular hit single, Living Next Door to Alice, reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and, in March 1977, reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.

Smokie was formed in the late 1960s by St Bede’s classmates Terry Uttley, Alan Silson and Chris Norman.

In the 1970s they had top 10 singles including If You Think You Know How To Love Me and Oh Carol.

They split up in the early 1980s, but reunited at a 1986 fundraising concert for relatives of Bradford City Fire victims.

Chris Norman was later replaced by Black Lace singer Alan Barton, who was with Smokie until his death following a tour bus crash in Germany in 1995.

With Mike Craft as frontman, Smokie continued touring and were back in the charts in 1995 with comic Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown’s version of their 1976 hit Living Next Door To Alice.

Smokie are hugely popular across Europe and in the Far East.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

ZAYN MALIK

The East Bowling lad-turned-huge global music megastar.

He made his name 10 years ago, initially on the X Factor, as one fifth of boyband One Direction.

The group went on to achieve years of chart success, picking up every pop music award along the way. He was also the first UK artist to debut at number one on the Hot 100 with a first charted single.

Zayn left the band in 2015 and notched up a solo UK number one with single, Pillowtalk, the following year.

Meanwhile, some of his solo successes have included ‘Pillowtalk’ and ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’, his collaboration with Taylor Swift.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

GARETH GATES

The West Bowling-born singer was the runner-up in the first series of the ITV talent show Pop Idol.

The former Bradford Cathedral choir member enjoyed a debut number one hit with his cover of the Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody in 2002. I know it's a cover, but it's a great song.

Gates has sold more than 3.5 million records in the UK.

The 36-year-old moved into a career in musical theatre, appearing in shows including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in the West End.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

KIMBERLEY WALSH

Girls Aloud, a five-piece girl group, featuring Bradford-born Kimberley Walsh, were nominated for five Brits, winning Best Single in 2009 for ‘The Promise’.

The Bradford-born singer-turned actress, 39, is best known for being one fifth of former pop group Girls Aloud.

She was first seen on our screens when the group was formed from the reality TV talent show Pop Stars: The Rivals in 2002.

Walsh has since moved into acting and TV presenting.
