POLICE have issued a warning after a surge in thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles, in particular hybrids, in the Bradford district.

The devices substantially reduce the amount of harmful gases emitted into the atmosphere by petrol and diesel vehicles, and are a legal requirement for all petrol vehicles since 1993.

They contain precious metals such as rhodium, platinum and palladium, and the price of some of these metals has risen sharply in recent years. This has led to an increase in thefts of catalytic converters.

Cars most often targeted are hybrids, as since they have two power sources the catalytic converters are used less frequently and the metals are less likely to corrode and would be worth more for thieves.

Vans, 4x4s and SUVs are also at risk due to their ride height making it easier to access the exhaust system, and in West Yorkshire the Toyota Prius, Toyota Auris, and Honda Jazz are often targeted.

West Yorkshire Police advises people to follow these tips to reduce the risk of their car being targeted:

  • Park your car in a locked garage or where this isn't possible in a well-lit, populated area
  • Park close to fences, walls or a kerb with the exhaust closest to these obstructions to make theft trickier
  • Avoid parking half on the pavement - this may make it easier for criminals
  • In public car parks, park next to other cars and go into spaces head first to make it harder for thieves
  • If you have a fleet of vehicles, use low clearance vehicles to block access to high clearance ones
  • If the catalytic converter is bolted on, ask your garage to weld the bolts making it harder to remove
  • You can get your catalytic converter marked and ensure it is Secured by Design approved
  • Cage clamps can also be purchased to lock in round the converter
  • Install a Thatcham approved alarm and tilt sensor which activates if a thief tries to jack up the car

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around a vehicle, report it to the police on 101.
