They first went out at 4pm and will continue to go round the district keeping major routes clear.

Bradford Council also said its reserves of grit are well stocked and there is no risk of running out any time soon.

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: “Since 4pm today we’ve had 24 gritter wagons out treating the highway network in preparation for the snow forecast for tonight and early tomorrow morning.

"Our hard working crews who carry out this work, will cover 712 miles of roads over the next three hours.

"Once this initial treatment is completed we will then have four wagons on constant patrol throughout tonight from 7pm to monitor conditions on 300 miles of our most exposed roads where additional treatment may be required.

“Our drivers will be back out from 5am tomorrow to do a full grit across the whole of the district again.

"We will also have a further three tractor ploughs starting at 7am tomorrow morning. Ploughs are fitted to all gritter wagons when and where required.

"We will further review the gritting operations throughout tomorrow and as always our crews will be doing all that they can to keep the district moving.

“We ask that people continue to follow the Government guidance on essential journeys during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you do need to be out because your journey is essential please make sure you clear your vehicle of ice and snow before setting off, give yourself extra time, drive to the conditions and be courteous to other road users."
