THE Met Office has issued a weather warning for the Bradford district for snow and ice this week lasting more than 48 hours.

The yellow warning lasts from 9pm today, and lasts overnight, all through Tuesday and overnight again, and then nearly the entirety of Wednesday, before expiring at 11.59pm that day.

The warning covers the entire district and surrounding areas and warns that "snow, with a risk of widespread ice, is likely to push slowly northeast from late today, bringing difficult travel conditions".

Forecasters at the Met Office said: "A band of rain, locally heavy in places, is likely to push slowly north-east across Wales and England late Monday.

"As this rain comes into contact with cold air in place, it is likely to readily turn to snow across parts of northern England.

"One to four centimetres of snow is quite likely away from coasts, with five to 10cm possible above about 150 metres.

"Snow should turn back to rain from the south, lasting longest across parts of northern England."

On the Met Office's warning matrix, the weather is rated three out of four in terms of severity of impact, but only one our of four for likelihood of happening.

Residents in Bradford are being warned to expect possible travel delays on roads, with some vehicles and passengers potentially being stranded.

Bus and train services could be delayed or cancelled, and road closures and longer journey times are possible.

Some rural communities may be cut off, and power cuts and limited mobile phone coverage may also occur.

People are being warned to take care as there will be the risk of injuries from slipping and falling on icy surfaces, and some untreated pavements and paths may become impassable.

There may be cancellations or delays to air travel, affecting Leeds Bradford Airport.

People are required to stay at home as much as possible due to the current lockdown, and with this bad weather on the way it may be advisable to stock up in advance to avoid making any journeys that are not absolutely essential.

When it snowed earlier this month in the district it caused carnage on the roads and saw nearly every school in the district shut.
