POLICE issued Covid fines after stopping more than 60 vehicles as part of an operation.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Leeds West Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) conducted a traffic operation on Carr Road, in Calverley, last weekend.

The main motive behind this was to ensure drivers and their passengers were complying with UK Government restrictions.

The country is currently in the midst of its third lockdown, in a bid to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Government legislation outlines that people must not leave, or be outside of their home, except where necessary.

The exemptions include, shopping for essentials (for yourself or a vulnerable person), exercising (once per day and only in your local area) and going to work (if you cannot reasonably do so from home).

Leeds West NPT officers stopped more than 60 vehicles during the operation.

The team handed out two fines to people breaching Covid-19 laws - both were £100 each.

Five other vehicles received various punishments for traffic offences.

This included, two tickets for failure to maintain headlamps and two traffic offence reports for no MOT and no insurance.

Police also seized one car for no insurance.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Over the next few weeks there will be frequent traffic operations conducted in the Leeds West locality, so please ensure that travelling is for essential purposes only, as outlined by the UK Government.

"Thank you for your support."
