A WILSDEN man who did a barefoot walk in memory of his stillborn son compared the frost-covered gritted paths to "Blackpool beach".

Daniel Lee, of Lingfield Grove, Wilsden, showed true 'grit' all the way through last Saturday's eight-mile walk from Wilsden and back, which raised more than £2,000 for the charity's Tommy's.

The charity provided valuable support to Daniel, his partner Jade McCulloch and their four-year-old son Riley when the family lost their stillborn son, Tommy Daniel, on January 23, 2020.

Speaking on Tuesday, Daniel, said: "When I got up on Saturday, there was frost everywhere.

"My feet got ripped open and the salt from the grit got inside the cuts. It was awful.

"It was worth it though," said Daniel. "Because we raised over £2,000 in just ten days.

"I completed the walk in three hours and nine minutes but my feet started getting cuts on them within the first 20 minutes.

"My brother Ashley walked with me and wore a Superman outfit and was collecting donations from people on the way around."

The presence of Superman, or that is Ashley Lee, who is from Thorpe Edge, proved to be invaluable to Daniel, who said: "I couldn't have done it without him."

Ashley was kept busy collecting donations, which came from people around the local communities near Wilsden, which were a part of the circular route.

"I had some fantastic support from the community," said Daniel. "Cars were following me, beeping their horns and cheering me on.

"I felt really proud when I finished, but when I got home I just crashed. It was also quite an emotional day"

Jade also felt proud of Daniel for gutting it out.

"It went as well as it could for him," she said. "His feet are a bit of a mess because it was so frosty and the paths were gritted."

"I'm still picking bits of glass out of my feet," added Daniel. "I've been in bed for two days. I've only just started managing to walk today, and that's with a limp."

The barefoot walk was eight miles long and started from Daniel's house in Wilsden. He went down Haworth Road, on to Sandy Lane, down towards Cottingley, up towards Bingley and then Harden and back to Wilsden.

The walk was mostly on the road with some footpaths as well, and took in a lot of different surfaces.
