A Skipton motorist has been fined £200 for breaching Covid-19 lockdown restrictions after driving over 160 miles to Cambridgeshire.

The North Yorkshire resident had travelled to Doddington in Cambridgeshire to visit a friend who was not part of their support bubble.

It is understood the friend was also fined by police.

It was one of the recent incidents highlighted by police in the area.

Fenland Police issued a statement saying "Our neighbourhood policing team have issued five fines this weekend for non-compliance with covid regulations.

"First off was a group of three young girls who we encountered (not for the first time) in Chatteris on Saturday evening – we’d previously given words of advice and warnings to the girls and their parents on more than one occasion, however after clearly ignoring the advice, three £200 fines were issued to the parents.

"The second instance was in Doddington where we discovered a person had travelled from Skipton in North Yorkshire to stay with a friend – not part of a support bubble and clearly breaching restrictions. Two £200 fines issued.

"By breaking the law and not adhering to restrictions, these people are placing themselves and others at risk of the virus, and spreading it. We all need to work together in these difficult times, so please do the right thing and stay at home."
