SIR - To misquote Oscar Wilde, it would need a heart of stone not to laugh at the impotent rage of the Little Englanders as they see Dutch Customs seizing Great British ham sandwiches.

Sadly, it is their own fault because as Leavers they sought amongst other things to ‘take back our laws'. Having succeeded, they find that the EU food directives on food safety no longer apply in the UK and without a new agreement, British meat products are treated like those from any other ‘third’ country.

Until we can show that UK post-Brexit standards on all animal products are equal to or better than those in the EU nothing will change.

In other words, to get a ham sandwich past Dutch Customs we will be bound by the equivalent of EU law. What price sovereignty now?
