A MAN is recovering from minor burns to his hands and smoke inhalation following a fire in a street behind The Gables Surgery.

Crews from Stanningley and Bradford received the emergency call to Swinnow Green at 11.38pm and found the resident had got to safety outside before their arrival.

The man was "suffering from the severe effects of smoke inhalation", according to the fire service report.

He was treated at the scene but later taken to hospital by ambulance crews.

The fire started in the ground floor bedroom, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service confirmed.

Crews used two breathing apparatus sets, two hose reel jets and two positive pressure ventilation fans.

A spokesperson for Stanningley fire station said the incident had now been passed over to the fire investigation team.

Now the team is sending out a plea to homeowners, describing how the man was alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm.

Fire crews are urging people to make sure their alarm is operating in case they ever face a similar situation.
