ONE of the biggest fires of the past year in West Yorkshire was caused by sparks igniting diesel soaked “debris.”

West Yorkshire Fire Authority has released a new report into the biggest incidents it was called to between July and September.

In this period the biggest call out was to a blaze at barrel manufacturers R. Spivey & Sons on the Norquest Industrial Park in Birstall on September 29.

Ten fire engines were dispatched to the scene and the incident was dealt with by 68 firefighters from across West Yorkshire, and it took almost 10 hours to extinguish and close the incident.

The report, which went before the Fire Authority last week, said: “The cause of the fire is thought to be sparks from grinding igniting diesel-soaked debris under a fuel tank.”
