HIT show Gentleman Jack has been filming on Bingley’s old main street.
Scenes for the highly-anticipated second series of the global TV hit have been shot in the town’s historic quarter, and the Old White Horse pub.
Sally Wainwright’s award-winning drama, about 19th century landowner Anne Lister, has also been filming in Halifax and York. Suranne Jones returns as Anne Lister in the Lookout Point production for BBC1, co-produced with HBO.
In the new series all eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife.
Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile is dangerous.
The series is again based on Lister’s five-million word diaries, written in code. The cast includes Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker, Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan, Bradford-born Timothy West, former Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly and Peter Davison.
The production team is adhering to Government guidelines for safety during filming. Sally Wainwright said: “I’m more thrilled than I’ve ever been about anything that we’re returning with a new series.
"We had such an extraordinary response from so many viewers all over the world about the first series, I can’t wait to show them what we’ve come up with this time.”
Suranne Jones said: “I’m so happy to be back in beautiful Yorkshire, and I’m so honoured to be returning as Anne Lister.”
Faith Penhale, executive producer for Lookout Point, says: “We’ve channelled Anne’s determination to get this production up-and-running. The cast and crew have been incredible in helping make that happen."
Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, added: “In light of government guidelines allowing for UK film and TV production to continue, I’m delighted that cameras are now rolling on the next chapter of Anne Lister’s extraordinary life.”
The first series, which was partly shot in Bradford and featured youngsters from local theatre school Articulate, was a huge hit, with 6.8 million viewers across its eight-episode run, and was a major tourism boost for Calderdale, with many visitors from America coming to Shibden Hall.
Bradford City of Film director David Wilson said: “It’s great to have Gentleman Jack back filming in the Bradford district and I think it’s the first time a central Bingley location has been used in a high-end TV drama.
“The Bradford Film Office has remained open throughout the pandemic, but understandably things are taking a little longer to organise.
"The combination of Sally Wainwright’s brilliant writing and excellent portrayal of Anne Lister by Suranne Jones has made this series a real hit around the world.
"We’re really pleased to play a small role in helping to bring this Yorkshire story to life and to the wider world.”
