A COMMUNITY charity initiative has been set up to make sure needy children don’t miss out this Christmas.

Organisers of a Facebook appeal have been astonished at the level of support. Donations have been pouring in for children in Menston, Burley, Yeadon, Guiseley, Otley, Baildon, and some parts of Bradford.

Actress Kirsty Losada launched her appeal after witnessing a mum in Aldi not being able to afford some hot chocolate for her young daughter.

Kirsty, who grew up in Menston but now lives in Baildon, said: “I set up a Facebook group called ‘little elf helps- A secret sack of goodies to help you on your way’ encouraging the local community to come together, and collect donations to support local families who may be struggling to provide Christmas presents for their children this year.

“The Facebook group has quickly grown in numbers, and currently has nearly 700 members. We have been absolutely astounded by everyone’s generosity, and the donations we have received are simply incredible. We are supplying sacks to over 60 children who’s parents have contacted us directly asking for help with their children’s Christmas presents, as well as working with over 10 local schools providing sacks for their most vulnerable families. Each sack will be filled with six ‘staple items’ including, hot chocolate, Wrapping paper, festive chocolates, sellotape, colouring crayons, a treat for parents, then age specific new, or pre loved toys.”

Kirsty, whose TV roles include one as Sheridan Smith’s daughter in the BBC drama The Moorside, said: “My work as a professional actress, and acting tutor has also often meant I have worked in communities less fortunate, and really want to give something back.

She added:” It’s been really important to me that absolutely anyone can confidentiality ask for a sack. All they have to do is message an admin on the Facebook group. As long as they live in one of our ‘target areas’, they will get a sack delivered in a covid secure way.”
