HOMEOWNERS in Bradford can offset the expense of Christmas by renting out their driveways to motorists needing somewhere to park, according to an online parking portal.

The financial advice comes from YourParkingSpace.co.uk whose customers in 25 towns and cities earn more than £1,000 per year on average renting out their vacant driveways.

And with estimates putting the average cost of Christmas at between £700 to just over £1,000 per UK household, the additional driveway income could cover the extra spending over the festive period.

Harrison Woods, managing director at YourParkingSpace.co.uk, said: “Countless households across the UK are more than making ends meet by renting out their empty driveways to motorists needing somewhere to park.

“The additional income comes in particularly handy to pay for the extra costs that come with Christmas, such as presents, decorations, food spending and other little luxuries.”

Top earning driveway hotspots include London, Brighton and Edinburgh where residents earn £2,100, £1,944 and £1,896 per year on average respectively.

Furthermore, even in uncertain economic times, driveway income remains incredibly robust. From 2017 to 2020 the average annual driveway income has only changed from £1,130 to £1,106.

Harrison added: “Making an additional income from an empty driveway has to be one of the easiest ways to make some extra money.

“Although the landscape has shifted in 2020, we’ve already seen that more people are driving rather than using public transport and that when lockdown restrictions are lifted there is a surge in driveway bookings.”
