A BRAND-new food store has opened within an unused Sainsbury's supermarket in the North-East - and dozens of jobs have been created.

The Food Warehouse, which is run by Iceland, has this week opened on the newly-created Gateway Retail Park in Middlesbrough.

Earlier this year, the food store was confirmed as the first of a number of tenants to move into the Middlehaven site, left vacant by Sainsbury's for five years.

The firm has grown to have more than 130 stores across the UK with a number of stores across the region including in Stockton and Sunderland.

But officially opening this week with the creation of 30 new jobs, the 11,211 sq ft supermarket is the firm's first in the town.

Ash Triplett, store manager of The Food Warehouse Middlesbrough, said: “Our opening day has been a great success and the whole team has really enjoyed meeting people from our local community.”
