NEWS that Debenhams is to start a liquidation process is a huge blow for the high street.

The news came today after JD Sports confirmed it had pulled out of a possible rescue deal, putting 12,000 workers at risk.

The 242-year-old Debenhams department store chain said its administrators have “regretfully” decided to start winding down operations while continuing to seek offers “for all or parts of the business”.

Bradford's current Debenhams store was a popular boost to city centre retail when it opened in The Broadway in November 2015.

But many people fondly remember the older store on Manningham Lane, which replaced the much-loved Busbys shop.

Debenhams took over the business in August 1958 and was a landmark store in the city until it closed in 1978.

The following year a huge fire destroyed the magnificent Victorian building.

Our archive picture shows shoppers queuing outside Bradford’s old Debenhams, ready to grab some bargains in the winter sales of 1976.
