A WORLD War Two veteran has died at the age of 98.

Kathleen Carson, known as Kay, who lived in Clayton, hailed from Thetford, Norfolk, and when the war broke out she volunteered to join the Women’s Royal Navy Service (Wrens) and was stationed in Lowestoft, Suffolk, where she served as a petty officer cook in the catering corps.

Her daughter, Helen Drummond, said she spoke of the good times, but also the sadness she endured, including when her eldest brother, Tom, died at the age of 24 in a Prisoner of War camp in Malaysia.

The man who would become her husband, Victor Carson, was in the navy and the pair were introduced by a crew member on his vessel, whose sister was also in the Wrens.

They became pen pals and Kay visited Bradford during the war. They married on April 22, 1946, in Thetford, then started married life on Arthington Street, off White Abbey Road, before moving to Clayton, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

They were married for 71 years and had two daughters; Patricia, 70, and Helen, 64.

Kay was a housewife, while Victor worked for the postal service until the age of 57. He died in January 2017.

Kay, who also had three grandchildren and six great grandchildren, died on November 5 from Covid-19, but had been ill in recent years with a number of conditions.

Her funeral will be held tomorrow, with donations going to the Royal British Legion.
