A BRAVE 10-year-old from Bradford is thought to be one of the youngest victims of Covid-19 in the UK.

Fehzan Jamil's parents have spoken of their "indescribable" pain following his death.

The 10-year-old, who had a number of underlying health issues, including epilepsy, died in hospital after contracting the disease and was laid to rest on Monday, November 23.

Speaking to Channel 4 News, Fehzan’s parents, Tayyaba and Mohammed Jamil, described their son as a “really brave fighter” and “soldier”, who was a cheerful boy despite his health problems.

In an interview broadcast on Tuesday evening, his father said: “There were four of us, now there are only three. The pain is indescribable.”

His mother added: “I just can’t describe our loss. Everything feels empty now.”

Fehzan’s family tried to shield him during the pandemic, knowing that his health issues made him vulnerable to the virus.

He was kept at home as much as possible, with those coming into the house required to wear a mask.

Mr Jamil said: “We tried our best to keep him safe but somehow Covid got to him."

Fehzan was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) for several years and his family praised the care he received.

Mrs Jamil said: “All of the staff were very good to us.

"They have known Fehzan for many years now and have always looked after him.

“They let us be beside him when he died. It meant a lot.”

When Fehzan entered hospital, his family, used to previous trips, had not been too worried.

Mohammed said: “But this time turned out different, he never came home. Covid took him from us.”

Fehzan is believed to be one of the youngest victims of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK.

Other young victims include a 13-day-old baby, thought to have no underlying health conditions, who was reported to have died with Covid-19 by NHS England in June.

The 10-year-old's family are thought to have links to the Little Horton of Bradford.

One of the councillors who covers that ward admits the news is a tragic shock and outlined it is a reminder that everyone must continue to take the virus seriously.

Councillor Talat Sajawal (Independent, Little Horton) said: "It's devastating news to know that he's one of the youngest victims of Covid.

"My thoughts and prayers are with his family at the moment."

The councillor has urged people to abide by the "hands, face, space" and social distancing rules in particular, in order to prevent further tragedies like this.

He said: "It puts everything into perspective really, of how serious it is - take it seriously.

"The message is clearly there."

Within minutes of the tragic news being revealed, the T&A’s Facebook page was flooded with messages from wellwishers.

One said: “So sad when this terrible virus takes away such a young child. RIP young man.”

Another said: “Poor little boy, thoughts go out to his family xx.”

One Facebook user added: “Heartbreaking! RIP little man xx.”

While another wrote: “Sorry of the loss of your son, Rip. xx.”

The interview with Fehzan's family comes as the Government said a further 608 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for the Covid-19 virus, as of Tuesday, November 24.

This is the highest figure since May 12, when 614 deaths were reported, and brings the UK total to 55,838.
