SOME Bradford schools still remain closed one week on from the major scrap tyre fire near the city centre.

The blaze broke out at the site of a former go-kart track, on Upper Castle Street, in the early hours of Monday morning (November 16).

At the height of the fire, 100 firefighters, 15 fire engines and two aerial appliances were needed to tackle the huge flames emanating from the mass of tyres.

It has caused huge disruption all week. As of yesterday afternoon, three fire engines were still at the scene, using one large jet and two ground monitors.

School closures today

Rainbow Primary School, on nearby Nelson Street, is closed.

A statement on Bradford Council's website says: "Rainbow School is one of the key school in the vicinity, Environmental Health will confirm safe opening.

"In their Friday briefing we were advised that further checks were to be carried out this weekend and the school will be updated before 4pm on Sunday 22nd Nov with regards to the safety of the environment for us to re-open.

"We have, however not had any further updates today. Regrettably, we have had to make our decision based on the safety of the school environment for children and staff, as we see it . We will hopefully be able to get further advice tomorrow to inform everyone of next steps."

Children are remote learning.

Bronte Girls' Academy is also closed, as is New College.
