ON MONDAY morning the people of Bradford and surrounding areas were met with a sight that wouldn't look out of place in an apocalyptic film.

A huge fire had erupted in the city centre in the early hours of the morning and huge plumes of thick smoke were wafting into the air.

The fuel for the blaze was a mound of hundreds of tyres, at a former go-kart track, off Spring Mill Street.

Almost 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines tackled the fire at its height, battling huge flames emanating from the mass of tyres.

In the days since, crews have attempted to take control of the blaze.

But the scrap tyre fire continues to wreak havoc with the city – from businesses and schools closing, to the blaze reportedly reigniting on Friday afternoon.
