A LARGE scrap tyre fire which erupted at the start of this week is still causing trouble in Bradford.

There are 17 schools in the city that are fully closed today, due to the effects of the blaze.

This includes 10 primary schools, three schools that cater for secondary and sixth form pupils, two secondary schools, a sixth form and a school catering for all age ranges.

The tyre fire broke out at a go-kart track, off Spring Mill Street, in the city centre just after 3am on Monday morning.

Almost 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines tackled huge flames emanating from the mass of tyres at its height and there were still eight crews and one aerial ladder appliance at the scene overnight.

Huge plumes of smoke rose above Bradford as the fire raged on in its early stages and the effects of that are still being felt.

These 17 schools have fully shut today due to the fire and smoke:

  • All Saints CofE Primary School (Bradford):

Notes: Due to very poor air quality thanks to the fire nearby, school will be closed to all pupils today.

  • Bowling Park Primary School:

  • Bradford Academy:

Notes: Bradford Academy will be closed on 20th November 2020 for all students.

Due to the impact of the fire that has been burning since Monday and the change in wind direction today it has caused a significant impact on the air in the immediate vicinity.

This has led to a deterioration in the air quality within the building and as such we are having to close the school to allow for ventilation.

Please check our website for the latest information over the weekend.

  • Bradford District PRU:

Notes: Acrid smoke in the local area from this week's fire is causing severe air pollution.

  • Bronte Girls' Academy:

Notes: Bronte Girls' Academy will remain closed due to a fire in the local area.

Notes: Unfortunately, due to the toxic fumes that have settled over the surrounding area from the fire in the centre of Bradford, and the fact that - due to the Covid risk assessment - we are unable to keep the windows closed to keep fumes out of the building, we have no alternative but to close school for today.

We will re-open on Monday 23rd November.
