LATEST NEWS: Two arrested in connection with scrap tyre fire

A SCRAP tyre fire is continuing to play havoc in Bradford more than 48 hours after it first started.

There are 10 schools in the city that are fully closed today, due to the effects of the blaze.

This includes eight primary schools, one secondary school and one sixth form.

The blaze broke out on Upper Castle Street, East Bowling, just after 3am on Monday morning.

Almost 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines tackled huge flames emanating from the mass of tyres at one point and there were still 60 crew members at the scene last night trying to bring the fire under control.

Huge plumes of smoke rose above Bradford as the fire raged on in its early stages and the effects of that are still being felt.

These 10 schools have fully shut today due to the fire and smoke:

  • Barkerend Primary Leadership Academy

Reason: Due to the smoke from the fire, which is compromising the school's Covid-19 risk assessment.

Notes: School closed to all pupils.

  • Bronte Girls' Academy

Reason: Bronte Girls' Academy will remain closed due to a fire in the local area.

  • Byron Primary School

Reason: School will be closed again today as a result of the smoke pollution compromising its Covid-19 risk assessment.

Notes: Parents will be notified by text of further developments. Teachers will be contacting children regarding working at home.

  • Dixons City Academy

Reason: School continues to be closed due to the fire.

Notes: Students to continue to work remotely using google classroom and 100 per cent books.

  • Dixons Marchbank Primary

Reason: Due to the smoke from the fire, which is compromising the school's Covid-19 risk assessment.

Notes: Students have access to home learning and teachers will be in touch about learning online.

  • Killinghall Primary School

Reason: Due to smoke from the fire, the school cannot be kept ventilated today, which compromises its Covid-19 risk assessment.

Notes: Pupils should work form home using Seesaw.

  • Lapage Primary School and Nursery

Reason: School remains closed due to the smoke from the fire, which is compromising the school's Covid-19 risk assessment.

Notes: Teachers will provide online learning. A text will be sent to parents to inform about the school opening tomorrow.

  • Rainbow Primary School

Reason: Dangerous levels of acrid smoke from fire in the local area.

  • St Mary's and St Peter's Catholic Primary School

Reason: Due to the smoke from the fire, which is compromising the school's Covid-19 risk assessment.

Notes: Teachers will place work on Purple Mash and SeeSaw for the children. A text message will be sent out in the morning to inform parents if the school is closed tomorrow.

  • Dixons Free Sixth Form

Reason: Due to road closures and the aftermath of the fire in the local vicinity.

Notes: Students to work remotely. Work will be available via Teams/SharePoint/Emails.
