A MAJOR fire has broken out in Bradford today, disrupting travel and forcing schools to shut.

The blaze on Upper Castle Street, East Bowling is believed to have started between 3am and 3.35am today.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service confirmed that the fire happened at an "old go-kart track" and involved "numerous scrap tyres", while adding that around 100 firefighters remained at the scene at around 9am this morning.

It was also reported that 15 fire engines were at the scene, with two aerial appliances also in attendance, while the blaze has also halted travel plans and led to school closures.

There are diversions and cancellations on train services between Leeds, Bradford and Halifax, with passengers advised to check the details of their journeys with Northern beforehand.

All services to and from Bradford Interchange are currently cancelled.

Bradford Council said that four schools in the area are closed today following advice from the fire service. They are:

  • Bronte Girls Academy
  • Rainbow Primary School - this school will also be closed on Tuesday
  • Dixons City Academy
  • Dixons Free Sixth Form

Local residents were advised by West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to keep their windows and doors shut as smoke clouds spread across the city.

A number of nearby roads are closed. They are:

  • Upper Castle Street
  • Ripley Street
  • Junction of Manchester Road and Mill Lane
  • Junction of Spring Mill Street and Parma Street
  • Bolling Road

Fire crews from Featherstone, Dewsbury, Shipley, Rawdon, Illingworth, Halifax, Huddersfield, Morley and Skelmanthorpe were in attendance, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said.

An Environment Agency investigation is continuing over the suspected illegal storage of waste tyres at the old go-karting site in Bradford where the fire broke out.
