SIR - I was shocked to see on of all days November 11 a report that Extinction Rebellion had taken over the Cenotaph to pursue their campaign.

Along with many other pressure groups they seem to have forgotten or perhaps never knew that the sole purpose of today’s ceremonies is to renew the undertaking first sought in the Great War memorial scroll. It asks that those who did not fight and those who fought but survived would ensure that those who fought and fell would never ever be forgotten. As a token of our response we wear a red poppy as the outward and visible sign of the inward and spiritual grace of our perpetual remembrance.

It is also a recognition that we live in a country which permits Extinction Rebellion supporters and other like-minded individuals and organisations to have their say without fear of any kind of official sanction and to be protected by the state from any outraged private citizen moved to take action against them.
