A DRIVER and four passengers were handed a fine for breaching coronavirus regulations after driving from Derby to Bradford to "just chill".

Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Batley and Spen Team were dealing with a report of a burglary in the Cleckheaton area initially on Saturday, November 7,   just before they made their discovery.

Suddenly, a silver Toyota Yaris came around the corner, smashed into a curb and nearly hit the officers' marked police car.

The team chased after the vehicle, with the help of officers from West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit, and stopped the car a short distance away.

The Yaris had a defective and dangerous tyre, so the officers seized the car initially.

But, the driver had the tyre replaced at the roadside.

He got his vehicle back, but received a fine and points.

Police also conducted extensive checks on the driver and his four passengers.

There were no issues, but officers discovered they had travelled more than 80 miles from Derby to Bradford, despite being forbidden to do so under the rules of the national lockdown.

The group from the car tried to explain themselves and said they had come to West Yorkshire to "just chill officer".

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said this was not a valid excuse and all five of them were fined for breaching current Covid-19 restrictions.
