A KITTEN had to be put to sleep after suffering horrific burns in a suspected firework attack in Bradford.

It is believed a firework had been attached to the tail of the nine-month-old black and white kitten.

The incident took place on Barkerend Road, Bradford Moor, at around 7pm on Bonfire Night.

The kitten was later put to sleep due to the horrific injuries it had suffered.

It is not known who carried out the attack, or who owned the kitten.

Janice Rooney, who runs the Support for small Local Rescues in Bradford Facebook page, confirmed the attack and told of her shock.

She said: It’s horrendous. I can’t even comprehend what they were thinking and why they would do it.

“A lady was walking past at the time it happened and heard the kitten crying.

“The kitten had to be put down. It must have been in terrible pain. The burns were horrific on it.

“It’s shocking, it’s heartbreaking.”

Councillor Mohammed Shafiq (Lab, Bradford Moor) condemned the attack.

He said: “It’s just not acceptable at all.

“This is terrible news to hear and I would urge anyone who knows anymore information to get in touch with the appropriate authorities.

“I am really disappointed to hear of the cruel acts of some individuals in the local area which has led to the loss of a life of a love cat belonging to someone.

“It’s very worrying that, despite the local level of engagement we have done in the community to make our community safer.”

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "This sounds shocking and very concerning, and we urge anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible on 0300 1234 999."
