HALLOWEEN is usually a time for heading out in the dark, in costume, to enjoy some trick or treating. But this year things are different, due too current Covid safety guidelines.

You can still have fun at home though. We asked T&A readers to send us photos of their Halloween costumes, home decorations and pumpkin carvings, and here’s a selection.

Matthew Ryan, who has an assortment of pumpkins, each with its own expression, at his fireside says: “I picked all the ugly pumpkins no-one else wanted. Every pumpkin deserves a good home.”

Katie Penn’s home is all set for Halloween, with a ghost at the window, blood-stained handprints on the front door and a spooky selection of masks - and a skeleton - on the washing line!

“We’re still going all out with the decorations,” says Katie. “Children don’t understand that there will not be no trick or treating so I’m trying to make it normal for them, it’s our favourite time of the year. My daughters, Daisy, Molly and Emily, love Halloween.”

There’s lots of family fun on offer this Halloween, with a range of activities to do at home. Bradford Council, with support from local crafters, is providing tips for making costumes and masks from items around the house, and communities are urged to hold pumpkin carving competitions, with pumpkins displayed in windows and online voting within streets or neighbourhoods. Tag #bradfordpumpkin for the chance to appear in the council’s online pumpkin parade.

Bradford Council and local community groups have created Apple Day Party Bags to be given out to 150 local children, and Halloween-themed recipes shared on social media channels are aimed at family cooking sessions.

A Spooky Tale Night, supported by Bradford Libraries and premiered online from a mystery location on Saturday at 7pm, is aimed at ages six-plus. Get dressed up, turn down the lights and settle in for a creepy tale. At Peel Park and Lister Park there’s a Halloween Dance Trail for families to seek out zombies, skeletons, witches and mummies. A great way to have fun and learn about the park on smartphones. Keighley Worth Valley Railway is running a spooky story trip on a vintage bus, and Bradford Industrial Museum and Cliffe Castle at Keighley are hosting ‘Love Spiders’ events.

Happy Halloween!
