A BRADFORD bakery has received county-wide recognition for its 130-strong premium range of handcrafted desserts and pastries.

Just Desserts, which is based in Shipley, was named "Producer of the Year" in the Garbutt & Elliot "Food and Drink Business Awards" 2020.

The bakery firm was set-up more than 35 years ago in Salts Mill, Saltaire, by husband and wife, James (above left) and Carol O'Dwyer.

The duo now employ 30 staff members and have put in place a £160,000, five-year development programme to increase the footprint of the bakery.

This commitment to expansion, as well as the way Just Desserts pioneers products to meet market and consumer demand (such as its popular vegan range) was commended by awards organisers and York and Leeds-based accountancy firm, Garbutt & Elliot.

James O’Dwyer, Managing Director of Just Desserts said the firm is "absolutely delighted" with the award, particularly in these testing times.

He added: "It’s testament to the continued hard work, passion, innovation and dedication of our bakery team in such a challenging climate.”

Garbutt & Elliot launched the "Food and Drink Business Awards" three years ago.

The aim was to celebrate the county's best food and drink producers and retailers, with the "Producer of the Year" class recognising Yorkshire businesses doing something exceptional.

Just Desserts impressed with its innovation, from its individual cheesecakes to collaborations with high-profile brands such as, Lotus Biscoff - the famous little red Belgian biscuit which is used in Just Desserts's Cheesecake and Gateau range.

Matthew Grant, Partner at Garbutt & Elliott said: “It was great to get the opportunity to visit such an established and resilient Yorkshire business.

"James and Carol have created an incredible business and the award is well deserved.”
