FEARS are growing that a Woolworths return could be a hoax.

The news spread today that the company would be making a sensational reappearance on the high-street.

A Twitter account, called UK Woolworths, emerged online and a post was published from the handle today outlining it would open three trial stores in late 2021.

The account sent out a string of tweets this morning which hinted at a "surprise" announcement at 9am, which would "save 2020".

The post at 9am said: "Here to save 2020.

"Woolworths is coming back to your high street, as a physical store.

"A couple of legal things to get sorted, but we’re full steam ahead at Woolworths HQ.

"We want to get this right, so we need your help.

"What do you want at your UK Woolworths?"

But the account itself was only created this month and at the time of writing has 2,749 followers.

It is also not verified at this point (a blue tick on Twitter) and a link to a website in the account's bio does not work.

A search on domain registry websites also shows the "yourwoolworths.co.uk" address in the account's bio was only set-up on Tuesday, October 27.

Media editor at The Guardian, Jim Waterson, has called into question the authenticity of the Twitter account and therefore the posts about reopening.
