THE Great British Bake Off continued with Pastry Week for the eight remaining bakers.

The bakers had to tackle pasties, eclairs and a caged pastry tart showstopper for their three challenges.

Here is Sandy Docherty’s verdict of week five’s episode, as she continues her weekly Telegraph & Argus column which will be online each Wednesday morning while the series is on.

Sandy took part in the 2015 series and is the child protection and welfare officer at Titus Salt School in Baildon.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Sandy Docherty gives her views on the Great British Bake Off's Pastry WeekSandy Docherty gives her views on the Great British Bake Off's Pastry Week

On Pastry Week, Sandy Says:

“This is my favourite week. Pastry holds things and dishes and contents together.

“Pastry itself has a quality. It’s a lovely thing. People like an end of a pie and a crust. You have to applaud pastry.

“If you can make pastry, you can bake. You either can or you can’t do it.”

On the Signature – Pasties:

“It was lovely to see them cooking. There were some beautiful fillings last night.

“I was wondering if a sweet filling could have worked.

“Linda did not seem to have read the brief. You have to take the consequences.

On the Bakers:

“Laura was coming through good last night. There were no major disasters from anybody.

“Peter seems to be on his game. He was riding high last night.”

On the Technical – Eclairs

“Prue was looking for high end, Patisserie-style eclairs, not just frozen food-style eclairs.

“The amount of things they had to make threw them. There was a lot of components to it.

“They just needed a few minutes in the oven to get that golden crispiness.

“I did enjoy the technical. It got them all going. It was nice to see Peter get it.”

On the Showstopper – Pastry tart in a cage

“I liked the pastry tarts, but I’m not sure why a cage.

“The judges did not seem to taste the cages. Lottie and Dave’s were good. Peter’s was amazing.

“Hermine’s was very good. She is turning out to be a bit of a character.”

On the Star Baker:

“It was Laura’s night, last night. She was a cool head. It was great that she was star baker.”

On the Baker that went:

“It was terribly sad that Linda went. She represents a woman of a certain age in there (the tent).

“She is a very, very good baker.

“You just have a gut feeling when you know it’s you. You hit a wall. On the day, it just doesn’t come through for you.

“We could have lost Mark, but not one of Linda’s bakes came through.

“The showstopper did not happen for her.

“I’m just waiting for them (the bakers) to have a bit of fun. I want to be part of their fun., “There was a couple of their cages that I was holding my breath on whether they would work, or not.

“We’re just not getting those EastEnders ‘duff duff’ cliff-hangers at the moment.”

Quotes of the Week:

Presenter’s: Noel: “We want you to do pastry in the style of Paul Hollywood’s buttocks.”

Bakers’: From Linda: “A lot of us mums make pastry” – a comforting thing to say.

Lottie: “I’m looking for a reluctant little drop.”

On next week:

“Japanese week is an unknown quantity to me. It will be interesting to see what they do, as I don’t know what Japanese week holds.”
