A BURST water main on one of Bradford's busiest roads has caused disruption to both nearby properties and passing motorists.

Yorkshire Water confirmed that a burst main on Keighley Road, near the junction of Emm Lane in Manningham in the early hours of Monday morning was behind the disruption, but that water supplies were reinstated within a few hours.

However the ensuing roadworks continued to cause disruption at the busy junction today and it is expected to be a few days before the road is back to normal.

Amjad Pervez, who was himself caught up in the disruption, described the road as "absolutely gridlocked" as a result of the partial closure and three-way temporary signals, at around 1.30pm today.

He took to social media to voice his concerns, tweeting Yorkshire Water to ask why they had not worked through the night to avoid this.

A spokesman for the Bradford firm said that due to the impact on water supplies, their technicians had prioritised the repair, putting a temporary fix in place to restore water supplies within hours.

"We understand that roadworks can be an inconvenience, and our team is working around the clock to reopen the area of road as soon as possible. As it carries a significant amount of traffic, it requires extensive reinstatement to make sure the integrity of the road is maintained."

They added that roadworks are carried out during the day to avoid disturbing local residents with loud noise.
