A STATIC caravan being transported along the A59 yesterday (Monday) was forced to park up and wait because a section near West Marton, near Skipton was closed for resurfacing.

The lorry transporting the static home and its accompanying escort vehicle was heading from the direction of Clitheroe towards Skipton when it had to wait for about 20 minutes until just after 6pm for the road to be reopened.

North Yorkshire County Council closed the road between East Marton and West Marton yesterday for resurfacing work.

Villagers said no diversion signs at West Marton, meant drivers not knowing where to go.

James Malcolm, highways area manager, said: "The closure on the A59 was in place yesterday only under the restricted hours of 9.30am to 3.30pm with all signage in place.

"For any road closure the diversion route must follow a road of the same standard and unfortunately in this case the diversion route was lengthy.

"While we appreciate this can be an inconvenience, we urge people to follow the signage for the safety of all road users and to avoid confusion."
