PLANS for a £10 million leisure facility have been delayed yet again, this time by the Covid 19 pandemic.

A new facility at Squire Lane, near Bradford Royal Infirmary, was first announced over six years ago as part of a shake up of Bradford Council’s leisure services.

The facility would include a swimming pool, gym and dance studios.

Work on the scheme never started, and last year it was revealed the plans were “on hold.”

In September 2019 members of Bradford Council’s Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee was given an update on the plans, and were told that the plans were being expanded beyond just a leisure centre.

Concerns over plans to widen scope of Squire Lane leisure development

A report to members said plans were being drawn up for “a more holistic health, wellbeing community and enterprise centre on the site providing a far greater spread of facilities for the local population.”

The Council was working with Well North Enterprises CIC in order to develop wider plans for the site – the meeting heard.

The committee was due to receive an update on the plans this Spring, but the Covid 19 pandemic led to numerous meetings being cancelled, and Squire Lane has yet to return to the agenda.

Bradford Council was asked what the latest on the plans were.

A spokesperson said: “The work is still on-going and this is a live project which we are continuing to develop. Progress has been interrupted by COVID-19 but we should be in a position to share progress in the New Year.”
