A DJ driving a car with a wobbly wheel knocked down a couple and sped off leaving them lying injured in the road, a court heard.

Damian Walmsley, 44, drove home with the female pedestrian's hair stuck to his damaged windscreen.

He then drank vodka and lager to obscure any alcohol reading.

Walmsley, of Stocks Bank Road, Mirfield, who had three previous convictions for driving with excess alcohol, was yesterday jailed for 12 months and banned from driving for five years.

Leeds Crown Court was told Walmsley was driving back from Pontefract, where he had been performing as a DJ, in January when he found the car had a "nasty wheel wobble" at over 50mph.

Prosecutor Francis Rad-cliffe said Walmsley came off the motorway to use back roads but failed to slow down.

He turned out of Bennett Lane into Leeds Road at Dewsbury with his wheels spinning and hit Jacqueline Preece and Michael Murphy, both in their 40s, as they were crossing the road.

Mr Radcliffe said Walmsley drove home with some of Mrs Preece's hair stuck to the windscreen. He then drank half a bottle of vodka and lager before his sons persuaded him to confess.

Mr Radcliffe said Mrs Preece suffered four fractures to her leg, broken shoulder, broken collarbone, fractured pelvis, a cut to her head and bruising.

Timothy Stead, for Walm-sley who had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to dangerous driving, driving without insurance, failing to stop after an accident and failing to provide a specimen, said he felt desperately about the injuries and wished he could turn the clock back. He had left the scene in a panic.

Judge Jennifer Kershaw QC told Walmsley it had been an appalling piece of driving followed by further appalling conduct. She said: "This is so serious only immediate custody is appropriate."
