THE cause of a fire at a Bradford takeaway is under investigation. 

Fire crews from Bradford, Odsal, Fairweather Green and Shipley, Mirfield and a control unit from Featherstone, were scrambled to Burger Time, Great Horton Road, at around 2.30am today.

Police and paramedics were also called to the scene. 

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "When we arrived, it was found to be well alight, with the fire spreading to some upstairs flats, student accommodation, above."

Everyone in the four-storey building had to be evacuated, with five people rescued from the building, while firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control using five hose reels and a large jet.

All of the takeaway building was involved in the fire and smoke damage has also been caused to the flats above, but no-one was injured.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they are investigating the fire.

A spokesperson said: "Emergency services including fire and ambulance were called at 2.37am on Monday 14 September to reports of a fire in some flats above a takeaway.

"People were evacuated from the flats for their safety.

"The roads which were closed at the time of the incident has since been reopened.

"A police cordon remains in place today whilst officers examine the scene and establish the cause of the fire.

"The incident is being treated as arson and enquiries remain ongoing.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: "Our Building Control attended this morning and have reported the structure as sound and we have offered housing support to the landlord."
