A couple have been robbed in their bed by two armed raiders who broke into their home.

Matthew Jackson, 30, was asleep alongside his partner Marsha Girvan, 36, when he was disturbed by torchlight from the two intruders who were ransacking the bedroom.

One produced a knife and threatened to stab Mr Jackson if he did not hand over the keys to his Volkswagen Golf, which was parked outside. The offenders made off with the blue 56-plate car, a coat and a PSP player after rummaging through other rooms in the building, including the bedroom of 12-year-old Demi Girvan, one of two children who were also asleep in the house.

The incident, at the family's home in Fowlers Garth, Lees, Haworth, was reported to police at 1.31am yesterday and the stolen car was recovered in School Street, Denholme, at 1.47am thanks to a tracking device installed in the vehicle.

Mr Jackson said: "We went to bed at about 11pm and I woke to two lads in the room with a torch rummaging through my wardrobe and bedside cabinet.

"I shouted at them and they demanded my car keys.

"I told them they were downstairs to try to get them out of the bedroom, but they didn't believe me and one of them got a knife out and said he was going to stab me if I didn't hand them over, so I gave them to him.

"I was shocked - not scared. I didn't know what to do at the time because I had just woken up and it was a bit of a daze.

"They drove off in the car, which we had only had for nine days.

"They went into the 12-year-old's room and woke her as well, so she is quite distressed. We are now fitting new internal locks and padlocks to reassure her and to stop it happening again.

"You don't realise how vulnerable your house is until something like this happens. We are all a little bit shaken up."

Police believe another vehicle - a Vauxhall Astra 56-plate - might have been involved in the offence and could also have been stolen.

"We think the Astra may have been cruising around the area for a while looking for a target," said Detective Inspector Peter Craig, of Keighley CID.

He said: "This is a particularly disturbing crime due to the fact the offenders challenged the complainant and threatened him with a knife in his own bedroom while his partner and children were all asleep upstairs in bed.

"While this is a rare occurrence, it is something the police are treating very seriously."

Det Insp Craig said he was keen to hear from anyone who saw either vehicle in the Lees area or en-route to Denholme, where the Volkswagen was recovered.

He said: "The Volkswagen was recovered quickly in Denholme. When cars are fitted with a tracking device, the owner of the car rings the tracking company if it is stolen and they activate the device, then ring the police. They told us where the car was, we went and there it was."

Nobody was injured in the incident.

The offenders, who are believed to have gained access through the back door, are both described as white, 17 to 18-years-old, about 6ft tall and medium build.

One is believed to have distinctive blond hair, possibly long, which was poking out from beneath the hood of a black Berghaus coat.

The other wore a long black hooded coat, pulled tight around his face. He had dark tracksuit bottoms and white trainers.
