A terrified female cashier was forced to hand over cash at gunpoint during a raid on a Shipley bookmakers last night.

The woman, 26, was about to cash up for the night when two masked men, armed with a gun and a metal baseball bat, struck at William Hill in Crag Road, Windhill.

The man with the gun had it hidden in the arm of his jacket and pointed it at the cashier while the other man demanded cash. The woman is believed to have handed over more than £1,000.

Detective Inspector Peter Craig, of Keighley CID, said the woman was "visibly shaken and upset" when she was interviewed by officers following her ordeal at 8.30pm yesterday.

A fellow worker at the betting shop, who did not want to be named, said the woman was too scared to return to work until at least next week.

The gunman was described as being about 5ft 8ins, slim, wearing a black woollen balaclava, a black hooded top, dark Adidas tracksuit bottoms and dark trainers.

The second suspect was about 5ft 10ins, slim, with broad shoulders. He was also wearing a balaclava with a dark coloured hooded top, black trousers and black shoes.

Det Insp Craig said the raid had similarities with another armed robbery at the Co-op in Allerton Road, Allerton, two weeks ago but it was too early to formally link them.

Det Insp Craig said: "Nobody was injured in yesterday's robbery and police are appealing for anyone who was in Crag Road or in the area at the time, who may have seen two males looking suspicious either prior to or after the robbery."
