A man was knocked to the ground and punched and kicked in an unprovoked attack.
The 39-year-old was walking along Bradford Road, Keighley, when he was set upon.
Four men attacked him at the junction with Parson Street, after one had asked for a cigarette.
The victim, from County Durham, suffered a gashed eye and was taken to Airedale Hospital.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, at 11.15pm on Tuesday, or has information about the attackers to come forward.
The suspects are described as white and aged 18 to 20. One was wearing a black and white striped top.
