Fire stations across the district will soon welcome 11 new recruits, fresh from a 13-week intensive training programme.

The recruits, two posted to Bradford, Odsal and Shipley and one each to Idle, Bingley, Keighley, Ilkley and Cleckheaton, will begin a nine-month probationary period prior to completing an NVQ level three qualification.

So far this year 1,400 people have applied to be a firefighter in West Yorkshire and 70 have completed the course at the brigade's International Training Course in Birkenshaw.

Trainee course director Richard Gomersall said: "Pre-selection entry testing indicates that a person has the potential to pass the initial trainee course and instructors then try to unlock that potential and turn someone without any fire service knowledge into an effective operational team member in 13 weeks. The trainee course is intensive and the trainees are tested to their limits.

"For those who graduate, there is a great sense of achievement and the reward of a fulfilling career ahead. I know how hard the latest group of trainees have worked."
